TOPIC: Restitution and feeding in lieu of Qada and It'am.

As-Sawm means fasting. Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the basic pillars of Islam. It is obligatory upon every Muslim.  However, Allah exempt some people from it, in accordance with His say in Q2:V184; click here to see the verse. 

What is Qada?

Qada means restitution or fasting for the number of days missed during the month of Ramadan.

Qada is necessary when a fast in the month of Ramadan is missed by the following:

1. One who is sick.

2. One who undertakes a journey.

3. A menstruating woman.

4. A nursing mother who fears for the baby.

5. A pregnant woman who fears that fasting may cause harm to the unborn baby.

Waht is It'am?

It'am means feeding a poor man in lieu of each fast missed in the month of Ramadan.

Fast missed due to the following reasons that leads to It'am.

1. Old people who are likely to suffer from fasting.

2. A labourer whose work is too hard for fasting.

3. A pregnant woman.

4. A nursing women.

KAFFARAH

What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is way a Muslim atoned for sin he/she committed.

When is Kaffarah done.?

Kaffarah is done when a fasting Muslim committed one of the  following Sin.

1. Eating.

2. Drinking.

3. Smoking or 

4. Having a sexual intercourse, during the the day time in the month of Ramadan.

How is Kaffarah done.?

Anyone who intentionally breaks his/her fast should expiate his/her Sin by undergoing one of the following penalties:

1. Observe sixty (60) fast consecutively without interruption, Or

2. Feeding sixty (60) poor people, Or

3. Set a Muslim slave free.

NB: Since there is no slaves these days, only the first two methods are applicable.
