ISLAMIC STUDIES JSS II WEEK II Topic: Suratul fil INTRODUCTION Suratul fil (Chapter of the Elephant”) is the 105th chapter (surah) of the Quran. It is a Mekkkan sura consisting of 5 verses. The surah is written in the interrogative form. ARABIC TEXT The arabic text of suratul fil view here TRANSLITETRATION OF SURATUL FIL 1. Alam tara kaifa fa’ala rabbuka bi ashaabil feel 2. Alam yaj’al kai dahum fee tad leel. 3. Wa arsala ‘alaihim tairan abaabeel. 4. Tar meehim bi hi jaaratim min sij jeel. 5. Faja ‘alahum ka’asfim m’akool. TRANSLATION OF SURATUL FIL In the name of Allah the most Gracious, the most Merciful. 1. Have you not considered, [O Muhammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? 2. Did He not make their plan into misguidance? 3. And He sent against them birds in flocks, 4. Striking them with stones of hard clay, 5. And He made them like eaten straw. COMMENTARY OF THE SURAH. This surah refers to an event that happened in about 570 A.D. Abraha al-Ashram was the Abyssinian (Ethiopian) Governor of Yemen. He was intoxicated with power. He hated Ka'abah and wished to destroy it because it was attracting more pilgrims than the temple built byugoslavia him. So he came with aye large-mail army and many elephants to attack Ka'abah. Allah annihilate his bad intention by a shower of stones thrown by flocks of birds He sent to destroyed the invading army. This was the year Prophet Muhammad SAW was born.
